But Chiron reacts differently here than any other type of trine. There can be a deep wound because you were too resistant to change, or too closed off on trying something new, or did not know how to deal with changes in areas you took for granted and you were criticized or judged for this by others.

Doors may have opened up in areas in where you had no idea there were any doors. Since Chiron in trine teaches one not to take anything for granted, the lesson, once learned, gives you the ability to look into places others ignore, to try methods others would not expect to be valid (too commonplace, or too ordinary, or simply not ‘worthy’ of consideration). (When you come up with a new procedure, others might find themselves saying, “Now why didn’t I think of that, it was right in front of me all the time?”).

But until you learn to be open to change, willing to keep an open mind to the unexpected, you may find yourself feeling very insecure, and when these unexpected doors are open you may react with fear, or even by becoming defensive. If you have not learned to be open, there can be a tendency to try to erect barriers in the areas influenced by Chiron, to try to shield Mars from the unexpected. These barriers are major hindrances to your drives, your self-expression, because Mars needs new perspectives to grow. Chiron and Pluto do not reach opposition often, but when they do they often continue that aspect for several years, creating what some call a sub-generation. In the past hundred years, they only were in opposition for one period, but everyone born from March 1961 through February 1966 have this aspect in their chart.

This aspect seems to express itself in one of two ways.

• In some natives it shows up as a great need to overcome some powerful inner hostility stemming from early childhood. This hostility may come from being constantly thwarted by parents, or from being a recipient of hostility from others in the environment. Whatever the cause, there are major lessons to learn about opening up, getting in touch with the inner rage, and then cleansing it once and for all from the system.

• In other persons, rather than anger, the expression is a need to win, to overcome obstacles and to beat any opponent. In both cases, you need to face the root of the hostility, or intensity, in order to bring about the needed healing.

It also gives a deep awareness of suffering, something you can put out of your mind but which never completely leaves you. I once read that we laugh at most jokes because it is a way to deal with the pain and suffering; we laugh because we can identify with the sorrow the object of the joke is experiencing and the laughter is a needed release.

Chiron opposition Pluto people often make excellent storytellers, and tellers of jokes, because of this powerful awareness.

Chiron opposition NorthNode

The South Node represents what one already knows from memories retained in the unconscious of past life experiences, a storehouse of information to draw upon. The problems occur when a person dwells in the areas represented by the South Node, instead of drawing strength from them to use as they focus on the North Node experiences which lead to growth. Some feel that the South Node represents karmic experiences, knowledge learned in previous lives. But even if you do not believe in reincarnation, the South Node should be a source of strength, but not a place to reside.

Those who have Chiron conjunct South Node have difficult lessons to learn. There have been some serious, painful past experiences in your life. Chiron here initially can result in the blame game. Problems you have as an adult are ascribed to a strange or terrible childhood, and there is a reluctance to try working them out. When you are under stress, the tendency is to fall back on this excuse, or begin to act in an erratic manner, allowing Chiron’s maverick nature to come out in its most negative expression.
