One does not usually think of a trine as related to a conflict, but Chiron changes the dynamics. In fact, with Chiron trine the Sun, there is an internal fight going on.

When you were little, people around you made a big deal about knowing yourself, knowing what you were going to do. Perhaps you were reprimanded for not having clear goals, or not knowing yourself; perhaps others tried to force their expectations upon you. In any case, there is a wound here that caused you, at an early age, to come to a firm conviction about who you are and what you are going to do. The problem is that you also tend, with this aspect, to be resistant to change as if you must hold your present self-image at any cost.

Chiron does not allow complacency, or ruts, nor does it allow a person to remain resistant to change. What happens is that, until you have begun to heal, you will periodically experience new aspects of yourself from areas that you thought you knew completely.

If you remain entrenched in your self-image, these new aspects tend either to become repressed (and then work on subconscious levels) or warped to fit in with the self-image that already exists. Once either of these things occurs the process can snowball as more insights are likewise repressed or warped. You can see the danger of continuing this process for long periods of time..

What you believed in as a child may have been the source of a wound for you. Perhaps you had to put up a wall around yourself to protect yourself from attack on what you believed, or perhaps you had to accept certain things ‘without question’. As a result, early in life, you tended to take what you believed in for granted, or were too comfortable in your beliefs.

The universe it seems, abhors any resistance to change, so until you learn to heal from your wound, you go through periods of upheaval, as traumatic events come to challenge the validity of your personal belief system. And the results usually go one of two ways: a tendency to make some adaptation, but essentially to keep the same beliefs, or a realization that to grow, one must be open to new ideas, new concepts. If the first pattern is followed, there will be many more such challenges, until you learn to adopt the second pattern.

As a result of the wound, you may have built up barriers to shield yourself from these new challenges, such barriers are almost always shattered by the next challenge.

When you have begun to heal, you grow to accept the idea of growth and acceptance of new ways of interpreting situations, new beliefs, and new abstract ideas. This has the added benefit of often enabling you to perceive hidden meanings that others never dream about.

Compared to the average person, you have a unique way of interpreting things. As healing progresses, you have a talent for working in any area in which it is important to convey a slant that differs from the ordinary. It is a rare person with this aspect who did not as a child have a great deal of difficulty with parents. Since this aspect seems to stay within orb for many years, it seems to represent more people, whole generations, rather than single individuals. Thus, a great many people came from homes where there was difficulty dealing with authority. This aspect expresses itself as a tendency to get set into some routine, or some effort to build a structure that is impervious to change. You have a clear-cut idea of reality, and while you might not like it, it is secure. But then Chiron comes along and throws you totally off your feet. You may easily feel that you have been zapped! If this path is chosen, you will find that you must eventually go through the catastrophe all over again as you discover that the new reality is faulty, too. or, you may go to the extreme of disregarding conventions, structures, and any definition of reality altogether. You may become totally anti-authority. If you choose this route, you will also, one day, reach a critical point where everything collapses around you, only for you, it may eventually be the coming of a very heavy Saturn event (imprisonment, poverty, ostracism) causing a great loss of personal freedom. What this aspect is trying to teach you is a major lesson, but if you do not learn from such experience, the cycle can repeat.

The most positive path, however, is the acceptance of any definition of reality as temporary, and any structure as useful, but only as a means to an end. By learning to accept change, accepting authority as necessary to a particular situation (but not as all-powerful), accept that those in power are also human, you reach a great equilibrium. You can use Saturn when needed, and go beyond it when necessary. In fact, you can create your own structures to fit the occasion, and discard them when they’re no longer needed. One of the people with this aspect, Robin Williams, said it best as the title of his album, ‘Reality is a Crutch’.

Chiron quincunx Midheaven

Quincunx is always an aspect of adjustment. Chiron shows where one needs to focus on healing, and in many ways it can be said to show the hero’s journey, the dragons one must overcome in order to become whole. The Midheaven is how you’d like the outside world to see you, and so it is your public image and the career roles you take on. Putting these together shows that you have some very deep wounds which have many levels, and have impacted on you as a child, what you wanted to be when you grew up, and as an adult, the way you see yourself professionally and dealing with the public. As a result, your career will be an ongoing journey of healing as you uncover this pain, that hurt, and work to heal them.

It can be quite difficult, with periods of seemingly long-term discomfort and perhaps low self-esteem, forcing you to adjust your ego ideal, your interaction with the public, and the career choices you make.

This can go on until you come to terms with the fact that your life will never become set, unchanging; you will always be evolving, you must always be open to new ways of looking at yourself and what you are doing with your life; and that each time you go through the healing of another wound you are stronger, more whole, and more able to handle the next ‘dragon’ you need to face.
